What is the spin of a shaft, and is it important?

The spine is the orientation of a grained-wood shaft that has the greatest strength and stiffness. Although, practically speaking, it doesn’t really matter what orientation you hold the cue. For more info, see Diagram 3 and the surrounding discussion in “Squirt – Part VII: cue test machine results” (BD, February, 2008).
